Pen Test

I appreciate that I don't have the experience that Alan does when it comes to biro work, however I feel I need to comment on what is for me, the best Biro Black pen I've used the Bic ReAction 1.0 pen.

I'm used to using the Bic crystal grip pens on a regular basis. good though they are, sometimes I get problems with them when i work on cartridge paper. I find Bristol board tricky to use (given my style) and so I've tended to stay away from it.

With the Bic ReAction pen, the problem of using Bristol board is no longer an issue. The open goes on with minimal ... misses as does some other pens. Sometimes you need to press harder when the ink doesn't come out. Often this ends up in the pen unsuspectingly depositing small splodges of ink on the paper, or you get a tone/line that's darker than the rest. The ReAction has little to no trouble with this.

With the slightly wider pen nib, and with the ease of use compared to other pens, I can cover the paper quicker and more easily.

Downsides

My only issue with the pen is that I can't find any refills for it, not even on Amazon or ebay, and I can't the 0.7 version in a 'Ball Point' version only a Gel version. Gel pens are very much different to Ball Point pens! In the end I had to email Bic UK who sent me some.

Refill: 862226. I could be wrong, but my ReAction refills are totally white. These 862226 i suspect will 'fit' the pen, but they're for the Pro+ pen in reality. I guess i need to buy a Pro+ pen then!

The Bic Reaction ballpoint pen is a retractable ballpoint pen with a unique spring system that allows the tip to adapt to the writing pressure applied by the user, enabling it to be a lot smoother to write with.

.... whatever it does it works and works well.

I tried it against my Pilot Acroball 'M' last night, and again, the ReAction was far easier to work with. The Acroball would be better for fine line work, but i'd stick with the Bic for now.

if you're in the UK, the best online price is at Rymans £1.99 each (shipping not included)

So i went Asda in Estover Plymouth (Devon) today and saw some Bic pens ... so I had to grab some. I bought a Bic Atlantis in blue and a pack of Bic Crystal Fashion Colours Large.

Picture: Bic Large nib (top)is bullet shaped, and does what it says! Bic Crystal pen (bottom)

I bought the Fashion Colours .. for the colours. Bics range is growing, although i could still do with a yellow ballpoint and a brown ballpoint please Bic!The 'Large range has a 1.6mm nib giving a wider 0.6mm (up from 1.0mm nib giving 0.4mm) line on the paper. This allows me to cover the paper far quicker than the narrower pens.

What are they like to work with?

Rather than focusing on the colours, my particular style take a lot i 'light, barely touching the paper' strokes with the pen, and some pens need a lot of pressure to get going, and so they're not suited to my work. Bic, IMO is the best I've used so far, and the 'Large' range seems to be another winner. Now I feel confident in trying larger pieces, as I'm sure they'll bring my drawing times down.

The Large Fashion Colours along with the ReAction pen are a top combination :bravo:

Bic Atlantis

This pen took me a few minutes to adjust to. Unlike the ReAction pen, this pen needs to be worked quickly. I would be more confident doing basic tones with a ReAction, but for fine line work or small touches, the Atlantis would be a the ideal choice. Again, the Atlantis and the ReAction pen would be a good to use as a combo.

Well ... for my complaint about Bic needing to provide more colours there's this:

Bic Cristal Pocket Scents Scented Pens (Value Pack of 6, Plus 2 Free)

Image

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bic-Cristal-Poc ... EHY4HO3DI5

They include a few shades of yellow and a brown pen. They cost around £6.50 (Staples) and they only come in Pocket/mini form.

On ebay, this seller does a pack of the same Bic pens, but it's the original pack of 4, not the 6+2 offer pack.

Bic Cristal Bold pens

There are the Cristal Bold pens, but they don't seem to be available in the UK T_T

What did I buy Today?

PaperMate Ink Joy & Another Bic Atlantis (black)

ImageImage

Bought a Bic Atlantis in black and decided to give the PaperMate Ink Joy pens a go. They're like the Bic Atlantis pens ... but they're a little too quick for me. Depending on the paper, they act more like a Roller Ball or Gel pen rather than a Ball Point. Beautiful colour though! In comparison the Bic Atlantis pens are far more controllable, far easier to get a more even shade across a certain section of paper. The Ink Joy just ran away with me. Not bad, just slightly harder to get the kind of balance i go for.

The Triangular shape to the pen .... it wasn't a bad experience, but i didn't go out of my way to buy another Triangular pen.

I started with Bic Cristal Pocket Scents Scented Pens (Value Pack of 6, Plus 2 Free) . In France, you can find them in the supermarket and you find one of the few yellow you can find on the ballpoint pen market.

I didn't realise they were so much. I went to pay for them, but they were £6.80 ... i thought they were about £2.50 ... so i took the Atlantis and the Ink Joy. I'll probably go back and buy them.

I went to Tesco (Transit Way, Plymouth - https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=tesco ... 24&bih=640) and there was nothing in the way of Bic pens, so I might go back up to Asda.

I want to do the next piece in either black or blue ...one more wave. I want to get my hands on some 1.6 Bic pens .. normal black and blue. The project after that will be car audio related. I do like my Bics.

Got some Cristal 1.6 pens. Sorry for the picture, but as you can see, the 1.6 are darker than the standard Cristal pens. And the nibs are round instead of pointed.

So how good are they: I'm finding with Bic 1.6 pens its a bit of hit and miss, and you just have to pick the right one. I also got some Blue Atlantis pens 1.6 and again it was the same thing. Two of them were a nightmare but the third was just right. I do find the 1.6 a bit harder to control than the standard pen.

ImageImage

Got my WHSmith coloured pen pack. it took 4/5 days. i got a call from them Sunday afternoon of all times!I didn't realise they were open on Sunday. I haven't opened them yet.

Image

I also order a set of Bic pocket scent pens. They come in packs of 6+2 9offer) however i don't need the other colours. I just needed the yellow, for my current project, and i wanted it to be an 'All Bic' picture.
